Black Mountain


Black Mountain is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States.  It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named for the Black Mountain range of the Blue Ridge range in the Southern Appalachians.


About the town

The downtown area has many eclectic shops, attracting seasonal tourism, a main staple of the local economy. There are also many quaint bed and breakfasts. The town is near several Christian retreat areas; including Ridgecrest and Montreat Conference Center. Singer Roberta Flack, former basketball player Brad Daugherty, and NFL quarterback Brad Johnson, and Roy Williams hail from Black Mountain.   The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It has been ranked “One of the 50 Safest Towns in North Carolina” as well as the “Best Small Town in Western North Carolina.” It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area, median age is 47 years old. The average house price in Black Mountain is $273,100. The surrounding mountains offer walking, hiking, biking trails, greenways, camping, trout fishing, lakes, and nearby waterfalls. The valley is home to six major conference centers, two colleges, and several well-known summer camps.

Black Mountain Town Square has lots of local shops and restaurants with parking and a big grassy area. Black Mountain is home of the Swannanoa Valley Museum {[2]}. The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is located down the street from the Museum. In 2002 this small community raised 1.2 million dollars to buy the old Town Hall and convert it the Art Center. {[3][4]}
